Friends of the Mississippi River
With over 1,500 members, 18 active board members, and nine full-time and seven part-time staff members, Friends of the Mississippi River is the leading citizen organization working to protect and enhance the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. We use a three-fold approach to our mission, focusing on the goals of improving water quality, protecting riverfront land, and cultivating a “sense of place” by introducing people to the river through a variety of educational, recreational, and volunteer events. In 2009, our river stewardship program engaged 3,000 volunteers in hands-on activities to improve the health of the Mississippi River.
Friends of the Mississippi River is recognized as a charitable 501(c)3 organization by the United States Internal Revenue Service and is incorporated and registered as a charity in the State of Minnesota. Additionally, Friends of the Mississippi River has been awarded the Charities Review Council’s “Meets All Standards” Seal indicating that it meets all sixteen of the Council’s Accountability Standards in the areas of Public Disclosure, Governance, Financial Activity and Fundraising.
